Reducing the Risk of Isolation

The Community Advocacy and Resources for the Elderly Program (C.A.R.E.), operated by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO), is dedicated to promoting the safety, well-being, and independence of seniors in our community. Designed for older adults who live alone, this initiative provides regular home visits to ensure participants remain connected to services, supportive community networks, and local law enforcement.

While the program welcomes many seniors in need, it does not serve individuals who exhibit violent behavior or who are living with degenerative memory conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. This ensures that the program can focus on providing effective, consistent care and outreach to those it is best suited to assist.

Preventing Crimes that Target Older Adults

During each home visit, C.A.R.E. personnel go beyond a friendly check-in. They assess the home for potential safety hazards, verify that the senior is connected to the proper social services, and look for any signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. When concerns arise, they work closely with law enforcement and other support agencies to take prompt action.

C.A.R.E. partners with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, caregivers, and concerned individuals to share valuable information on crime prevention, elder safety, and available community resources.
