A Cornerstone for Sobriety and Fresh Starts
Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses began with a simple yet transformative mission: to create safe, sober living environments where individuals could recover from addiction in a supportive and structured setting. Each home operates as a democratically run household, allowing residents to share decision-making responsibilities and develop independent skills.
This peer-driven structure is foundational to Oxford House, as it places the responsibility in the hands of its members, fostering a sense of ownership, accountability, and mutual respect.
Inviting Families To Reconnect With Residents
Oxford House supports the families of those in recovery by inviting family members to reconnect with residents in a positive, stable environment. In addition to helping families, Oxford Houses serve as a trusted resource for medical professionals and counselors, who can refer patients to these homes with confidence.
Promoting Active Participation in a Close-Knit Community
In every Oxford House, residents benefit from a strong sense of community. Residents rely on one another meaningfully through group support meetings, interactive activities, and sharing household duties. This environment helps combat the isolation many individuals experience during recovery, encouraging residents to form close connections and prepare for independent living.
For those interested in joining the Oxford House community, the application process can be started here. An in-person interview is conducted to allow potential residents to meet current members and better understand the house culture and expectations. With a capacity to accommodate up to nine residents, each facility offers an intimate setting where everyone can contribute and be part of a tight-knit household.
