Building a Haven of Empowerment and Connection
Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses has grown into a globally recognized network of recovery residences, supporting individuals striving to overcome addiction. From their modest beginnings, these homes have expanded across the United States and internationally, offering safe, structured environments where individuals in recovery can rebuild their lives free from substance use.
The Oxford House model is distinctive in its approach. Each home operates as a democratically run household, allowing residents to share decision-making responsibilities and develop independent skills. This peer-driven structure is foundational to Oxford Houses, as it places the responsibility of the house in the hands of its members, fostering a sense of ownership, accountability, and mutual respect.
Establishing a Strong Support Network to Sustain Sobriety
Oxford Houses supports the families of those in recovery. Family members are invited to reconnect with residents, allowing relationships to heal and grow in a positive, stable environment. In addition to helping families, Oxford Houses serve as a trusted resource for medical professionals and counselors, who can refer patients to these homes for an ongoing, structured support system.
In every Oxford House, residents benefit from a strong sense of community. Residents rely on one another meaningfully through group support meetings, interactive activities, and sharing household duties. This environment helps combat the isolation many individuals experience during recovery, encouraging residents to form close connections and foster mutual support.
Promoting Active Participation in a Close-Knit Community
For those interested in joining the Oxford House community, in-person interviews are conducted daily at 8:00 p.m. This allows potential residents to meet current members and better understand the house culture and expectations. With a capacity to accommodate up to nine residents, this facility offers an intimate setting where everyone can contribute and be part of a tight-knit household.
