Distinguishing Itself as a Unique Model of Self-Governing Sober Living

Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses grew into a global network of recovery homes with locations across the United States and abroad. The houses were created to offer a structured, supportive environment for individuals recovering from addiction, providing them with a safe, substance-free space where they can focus on building healthier lives.

A central aspect of Oxford Houses is its dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for families. Family relationships often suffer under the strain of addiction, and Oxford Houses recognize the importance of mending these bonds. Through family-inclusive events, open communication, and collaborative support, Oxford Houses encourages families to engage in the recovery process.

Bridging the Gap Between Structured Treatment Programs and Independent Living

Oxford Houses are also a trusted resource for medical and addiction professionals. Therapists, counselors, and social workers see these houses as a valuable step-down option after inpatient treatment, offering a safe transition that reinforces the coping skills and behaviors acquired during clinical care.

Fostering an Open Space for Communication and Mutual Support

Life at Oxford House is designed to simulate a real-world environment while upholding the structure needed for successful recovery. Residents are encouraged to participate in the household through shared responsibilities, which include cleaning, meal preparation, and other daily tasks.

Residents build meaningful connections and gain confidence in their ability to live sober lives.

Maintaining an Intimate Setting Where Members Can Build Trust and Camaraderie

Prospective residents undergo a thoughtful in-person interview, held daily at 7:00 p.m., to assess their commitment to a sober lifestyle and their fit within the household. This daily interview process helps select dedicated individuals and reinforces the house’s commitment to sobriety, encouraging a shared dedication to recovery. With a capacity for up to eight residents, each Oxford House maintains an intimate setting where members can build trust and camaraderie.
