Building a Strong Foundation for Sustained Sobriety

Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses began with a single recovery home and has since grown into a worldwide network of supportive sober living environments. Designed to assist individuals on their journey to overcoming addiction, Oxford Houses provides a safe, structured space that promotes both independence and community. With residences now established across the United States and internationally, Oxford Houses have become a vital resource for those seeking to break free from substance use and rebuild their lives in a way that promotes stability, resilience, and accountability.

Each house operates as a self-governed, democratically run household, where residents share responsibilities and make collective decisions about house rules, finances, and daily operations. This self-management structure empowers residents to take ownership of their recovery journey, encouraging accountability, mutual respect, and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

Inviting Families To Reconnect With Residents

Addiction often takes a toll on personal relationships, creating strain and distance between individuals in recovery and their loved ones. Recognizing this, Oxford Houses welcomes families to reconnect with residents in a supportive, structured environment. Additionally, Oxford Houses serve as a trusted resource for medical professionals and addiction counselors, providing a stable living option that supports ongoing recovery after clinical treatment.

Cultivating an Environment of Shared Respect and Responsibility

Inside each Oxford House, residents quickly become part of a close-knit household that feels more like family than mere housemates. The environment is built on shared experiences, empathy, and a collective commitment to sobriety, all of which help residents form meaningful bonds with one another. Regular group support meetings provide open dialogue, where residents can discuss challenges, share successes, and offer encouragement.

Encouraging Deep Connections Through Social Engagement

Oxford Houses welcomes new residents through daily in-person interviews at 7:00 p.m., where prospective residents can learn more about the program and meet current members. With space for up to nine residents, each house maintains an intimate setting that encourages personal connection and trust.

The Oxford House model has proven highly effective. It blends structure with a sense of freedom that empowers individuals to take control of their lives.
