Helping Individuals Maintain Sobriety

Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses grew from a single, small home into a global network of recovery residences that help individuals overcome addiction and build healthier, more fulfilling lives. These homes, located throughout the United States and internationally, provide a safe, stable, and supportive environment for people who are recovering from addiction.

Each house operates independently, with residents working together to manage the home's day-to-day tasks. This self-sustaining model encourages residents to take responsibility for their actions and helps them develop essential life skills, such as leadership, communication, and conflict resolution.

Fostering Open Communication and Collaboration with Loved Ones

Addiction often causes fractures in families, and Oxford Houses recognize the importance of reconnecting with loved ones during the recovery process. The homes offer a supportive space where families can visit, engage in family therapy, and rebuild trust with residents. The Oxford House model also encourages open communication and collaboration with medical professionals, addiction counselors, and therapists.

Enabling Residents to Develop the Skills Required to Thrive in Society

Each home functions as a close-knit household, with residents engaging in group support sessions, social activities, and collaborative household chores. They also learn how to navigate daily life in a safe, sober environment, which is often a critical challenge after leaving treatment programs.

The structured yet nurturing atmosphere of Oxford Houses allows residents to practice the skills they will need to succeed in the outside world, all while being supported by others who understand the unique struggles of recovery.

Ensuring a More Intimate, Manageable Living Situation

In-person interviews are conducted daily at 7:00 p.m., providing a consistent and accessible opportunity for individuals to apply for residency. This process allows prospective residents to meet current household members, understand the house rules, and get a feel for the environment before committing.

The houses are designed to accommodate up to eight residents, ensuring a manageable and supportive living environment where everyone can be heard, respected, and engaged. The small number of residents helps foster a tight-knit community where individuals can form meaningful connections, work together on personal goals, and build long-lasting friendships beyond their time at the house.
