Grounded in the Principles of Self-Help and Accountability
Founded in the 1970s in Silver Springs, Maryland, Oxford Houses expanded into a widespread network of recovery homes with locations throughout the United States and internationally. Established to provide a safe and stable environment for individuals in recovery from addiction, Oxford Houses offers a model of peer-supported, sober living.
The homes also offer a supportive environment for families to reconnect with residents. This family-focused approach extends beyond the residents, as medical professionals and counselors see Oxford Houses as a component of long-term recovery, providing patients with the structured support they need to sustain progress outside of clinical settings.
Encouraging Positive Habits for Reintegration into Society
Life in an Oxford House is designed to mirror a traditional home environment, with each resident taking on shared responsibilities to maintain the household. Residents develop a sense of community, accountability, and routine through group support meetings, interactive activities, and collective chores.
Facilitating Meaningful Relationships and Individualized Support
Prospective residents undergo a personal interview to ensure compatibility and commitment to a sober lifestyle, with in-person interviews conducted each evening at 7:00 p.m. Each house accommodates up to eight residents, allowing for a supportive yet intimate setting that facilitates meaningful relationships and individualized support.
