Empowering the Community's Most Vulnerable Residents
Founded in 1984 by Joan Lohr as the St. Augustine Society, St. Francis House evolved into a cornerstone of hope and resilience for the community, dedicated to transforming lives through compassion, strategic support, and proactive care. What began as a modest meal service at St. Paul AME Church, backed wholeheartedly by Pastor Fr. Robert Baker of the Cathedral Basilica, expanded into an organization that provides food, shelter, and unwavering encouragement to the community.
Providing Housing and a Support Network
St. Francis House broadened its reach to address immediate needs and the long-term challenges many individuals face. With three supportive housing units on Washington Street, St. Francis House offers a safe, stable environment for those needing a second chance. These housing options foster security and provide a foundation for individuals to build their futures. By working closely with each resident, St. Francis House staff develop customizable plans to help individuals achieve stability and lasting independence.
Beyond housing, St. Francis House is a multifaceted support network. The organization offers access to essential household items, clothing, and various essential services such as computer access, laundry and shower facilities, and mental health counseling. St. Francis House addresses each person's unique circumstances by providing referrals for specialized services and financial assistance, creating a holistic support system that empowers them to take meaningful steps toward a more stable future.
Partnerships and Community Outreach
Through its collaborative partnerships with organizations like The Port in the Storm and Street Outreach Services (SOS), St. Francis House strengthened its capacity to meet the complex needs of those experiencing homelessness or financial hardship. These partnerships enable St. Francis to reach more individuals and offer a more comprehensive array of services, ensuring that each person has the necessary resources to rebuild their life.
